St. Louis Traditions: Best Gooey Butter Cake in Town
September 3, 2010 – 9:33 am | No Comment
Gooey Butter Cake

St. Louis is known for the creation of several unique foods: gooey butter cake, toasted ravioli, frozen concrete, ice tea and ice cream cones. The origins of most of these tasty dishes, except for Ted Drew’s frozen concrete, are much disputed. But who cares when they’re so delicious!

Gooey Butter Cake seems to have been invented in either the ’30s or ‘40s by a local professional baker. Legend says the first cake was an accident, and anyone who’s had a gooey butter cake can agree that it doesn’t look quite right. A good gooey butter cake is squishy, gooey and definitely looks under cooked. But don’t let that fool you!

According to the Riverfront Times, who composes an annual list of all great things from St. Louis, the very best gooey butter cake can be found at Gooey Louie. This bakery with locations on Chippewa (city) and Manchester (Ballwin) serves up ten amazing favors of gooey butter cake. You can stick with the original plain flavor, or get “Let’s Go Blueberries,” “Chocolate Chippewa,” or “Hwy 40: Driving me Nuts.”

You can also pick up a pretty good gooey butter cake at your local St. Louis grocery store if you’re in a hurry. Or you can make one at home! They’re pretty simple to bake, especially if you have a recipe that starts with a cake mix.

Try this version of gooey butter cake from Paula Dean that starts with a yellow cake mix and two sticks of butter. If a whole cake seems like too much, try making these gooey butter cookies to share. And here’s a recipe someone thought was so good, they bought a domain name for it: Gooeybuttercakerecipe.com.

Make sure to keep an eye out for a the Food Network’s “Food Feuds.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the network was filming in St. Louis to find the best gooey butter cake and the best BBQ. Yum.
