St. Louis County’s Metro West Fire Protection District is working to establish St. Louis’s first children’s Safety Town exhibit near Station 3 on Manchester Road in Wildwood. Station 3 holds the district”s administrative offices.
A visit to Safety Town will be like going to the Magic House, according to Mike Thiemann, the Coordinator of Community Services and Disaster Preparedness.
The estimated six million dollar project will be funded by donations managed by the non-profit Friends of Metro West Fire District. There will be no tax payer money used to build Metro West Safety Town.
Safety Town will be a 30,000 square foot facility filled with hands-on educational displays that will teach children about staying safe–all while having fun. Thiemann said the project will include a fully functional, life sized home (complete with yard) that will teach children and adults about the kinds of safety hazards they might find in their own homes and how to prevent them. There will also be space for classrooms and a fire truck bay to conduct car seat safety checks.
Kids will enjoy Safety City–a 5/8th scale town where children can ride Power Wheels or bikes to have fun while learning about road safety. The town will have functional child sized buildings to explore, with train tracks, water ways and real streets.
Thiemann said the facility will be open to both individual families as well as school field trips.
Metro West has been working on the safety town project since 2003. It will be largely based on a similar venue in Frisco, TX that is very popular with local kids and parents alike. You can visit Frisco Safety Town here to get a sneak preview of what Metro West’s Safety Town will look like.
