The St. Louis Rams football team will reveal the name for their new mascot at the St. Louis Zoo’s South Entrance at 11am Monday July 26th. The Rams asked their fans for suggestions on what to name the mascot, which is an athletic, back flipping ram in a jersey bearing the number 1.
Fans sent in over 1700 suggested names, which the team narrowed to a top five. The final name choices came down to Archie, Rammer, Rampage, Ramsey and Rush. Fans can still vote on Friday at StLouisRams.com
The mascot has already made an appearance at a Cardinal’s game, where he threw out the first pitch on July 22. See his visit to the KSDK studio here.
Kevin Demoff, the Rams’ executive vice president of football operations, said the organization decided to add a mascot to build on game-day entertainment and become more involved in the community. Demoff said he expects the mascot will make more than 300 appearances a year, from charity events to parties. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Team mascots are used not just to entertain fans on game day, but to reach out to fans in the community. They often visit schools, hospitals and public relations events. Dan Meers, who is the man inside the Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot said he’s even walked a couple brides down the aisle.
It remains to be seen if the new Ram mascot can rival the popularity of Fredbird, the St. Louis Cardinal’s mascot since 1979. This isn’t the Ram’s first attempt at a mascot. They tried it once before in 1996 with an ill-fated mascot named “Ramster.” Apparently Ramster looked more like a rodent than a ram and was “exterminated” the same season.
